Asanas work on our gross body, the sthula sharira. At this level, the necessary adjustments can be made easily. But, we need to hold an asana and adjust before progressing. However, we are in a hurry to either get into an asana or get out of it. Hence, we are not aware of the action that is needed to maintain a pose.
These days, everyone wants to do advanced and difficult poses that look attractive and fancy on social media. As of now, the pose of Adho Mukha Vrksasana is trending on the internet. In this race, we have forgotten that a stepwise sequence is required to do such an advanced pose. We should only attempt Adho Mukha Vrksasana after attaining proficiency in Salamba Sirsasana and Sarvangasana variations (these variations have anti-ageing properties). Sarvangasana is a healthier pose amongst all the asanas that help us to move from Annamaya to Anandmaya Kosha. So, you are reaping the benefits one way or the other, even though you cannot do Adho Mukha Vrksasana. It is inadvisable to blindly follow trends, which keep changing every other day.
There are various energy locations inside our body, also called chakras. When we perform such stunts without preparing our body for it, we violate these energy points. As a result, our lifestyle becomes full of indulgence as we have messed up with our energies. We end up moving in the opposite direction of Yog, towards the manipura chakra (energy point of desire), located in the lower abdomen. We must do standing asanas and forward extensions regularly with awareness and flow, so that the energy balances from the head to the toe. With regular practice of correct poses of the preliminary asanas, we can be ready for Adho Mukha Vrksasana.
Address and channelize the gross body, be aware of every muscle from the Annamaya Kosha to Anandmaya Kosha. Be clear about the reason you practise asanas. Limitations of the body will always exist. Overcome these limitations and progress in asana practice. Follow the step-by-step process which Geetaji and Guruji have already put in place for us. Everything else, including the advanced asanas will naturally flow towards you. This is Yog.
