How can one motivate oneself to get onto the mat every day?

Find your point of satisfaction. This very point is your motivation for the next day’s practice.  It is vital to understand and respect your rigidity, mobility, capacity, performance, and strength. We are used to thinking in terms of extremes like “I am flexible or I am stiff”. We grade ourselves in one of the two extremes and stick to that perception. Sometimes, we set such high goals for ourselves that our mind gets boggeddown by these expectations.

The first step is to make the mind work for you. In every asana, give your mind a direction to move. This happens when you focus on the right part of the body that will help you achieve the pose. Once the mind gets a direction, it leads to completion of action. Every time we complete an action, a certain chemical is released in the brain, which brings about the feeling of satisfaction.

The second step is to stop comparing. Do not compare yourself with Guruji’s perfect asana practice, or with anybody else’s for that matter. Somebody else doing a perfect asana is not going to help you in any way. So, it makes sense to focus on yourself and do what motivates you to come back to the mat tomorrow. Stick to your point of satisfaction!
