Strengthening the frontlines: Shriyog Institute’s contribution to the Indian Army on the 9th International Yoga Day

June 12, 2024 – The 9th International Day of Yoga marked a significant milestone for the Indian Army, as Shriyog Institute, renowned for its holistic wellness approach, embarked on a journey to enhance the physical and mental well-being of personnel posted across various challenging locations. This initiative, beginning on June 12, 2024, touched the lives of soldiers stationed in extreme conditions with limited resources, demonstrating the transformative power of yoga.

    The Inaugural Event

The grand inauguration of this initiative took place at two locations along the Border of India and Pakistan Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (POJ&K) – Tithwal and Kaman Aman Sethu. Over 30,000 Army personnel and their families participated in this landmark event. These sessions were designed to address holistic wellness, encompassing mind, body, and spirit, rather than just focusing on physical exercise routines.

    Extending Reach Across Commands

Building on the success of the initial event, Shriyog Institute reached across various commands: – Davar Z Gali Kamkari Trehgam Keran Tangdhar In each location, Shriyog Institute conducted interactive Iyengar yoga sessions, infusing ancient yogic practices with modern insights. These sessions provided soldiers with tools to manage stress, enhance physical fitness, and promote mental resilience.

Focus on LOC Posts in Kashmir

A particularly impactful aspect of this initiative was its focus on the Line of Control (LOC) in Jammu and Kashmir. Soldiers in these posts often face extreme conditions and live with bare necessities. The yoga sessions were tailored to address these unique challenges, with practices designed to be performed in limited spaces and under harsh conditions. The goal was to help soldiers maintain their physical health and mental well-being despite the tough environment.

Shriyog Shakti Kriya: A Special Practice for Soldiers

A highlight of the initiative was the introduction of Shriyog Shakti Kriya, a practice specifically designed by Shriyog Institute based on 25 years of yoga teaching experience. This dynamic sequence of asanas (postures) is highly effective for fat loss, joint and muscle health, and overall well-being. The Shakti Kriya also serves as a cardio exercise, beneficial for heart health. The Shriyog Shakti Kriya was especially beneficial for the Indian Army personnel as it was designed to be performed in limited spaces, ideal for soldiers stationed in cramped conditions. This dynamic sequence enhanced physical fitness, supported joint and muscle health, and provided cardiovascular benefits, crucial for maintaining overall well-being in extreme environments. Additionally, the kriya helped manage stress and promote mental resilience, essential for soldiers facing high-pressure situations on the frontlines.

The Shakti Kriya included the following asanas:

    • Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
    • Vrksasana (Tree Pose)
    • Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
    • Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II Pose)
    • Parsvakonasana (Extended Side Angle Pose)
    • Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose)
    • Chaturanga Dandasana (Four-Limbed Staff Pose)
    • Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog Pose)
    • Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose)
    • Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)
    • Malasana (Garland Pose)
    • Dandasana (Staff Pose)
    • Urdhva Hasta Dandasana (Upward Hand Staff Pose)
    • Marichyasana I (Sage Marichi Pose)
    • Purvottanasana (Upward Plank Pose)
    • Urdhva Prasarita Padasana (Upward Extended Feet Pose)
    • Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand)

    Impact and Reach

Through the “Yog se Arogya” (Health through Yoga) project, Shriyog Institute touched the lives of over 50,000 Army personnel. The sessions aimed to foster a culture of well-being and resilience among soldiers, emphasising both physical fitness and mental health.

    Continued Efforts and Expansion

Shriyog Institute’s commitment to the Indian Army extends beyond this initiative. In Pune, the Prakriti Wellness Centre, a dedicated wellness hub for Army personnel and their families, continues to foster well-being and resilience. The institute also dedicated four months to teaching wellness to over 3,000 children from classes 8th and 9th at APS School, imparting the importance of physical and mental health. Specialised sessions were conducted at Command Hospitals, AICTS, and the Artificial Limb Centre in Pune, extending support to those in need. Additionally, sessions for the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) were held, recognizing the pivotal role of yoga in improving women’s health. With 25 years of experience in holistic wellness, Shriyog Institute has profoundly impacted over 100,000 soldiers, officers, veterans, and their families in just one year. By illuminating the path to wellness through yoga, the institute ensures that those who serve our nation can maintain their health, vitality, and well-being. The journey of Shriyog Institute with the Indian Army highlights the transformative power of yoga in managing physical and mental health, especially in challenging environments. Through this initiative, Shriyog Institute has truly embodied the essence of “Yog se Arogya” – health through yoga.
